Background

The London Irish Symphony Orchestra was founded in September 2005 by Nick Newland and Marion Wood to provide a forum for young musicians of Irish birth and descent to explore rarely performed repertoire by Irish composers.

We are proud to be the only orchestra in the UK promoting classical music of Irish origins. Most of our concerts include World or British Premieres. In the past year, these have included works by Seán Ó Riada, John Kinsella, Jonathan Lee and the Orchestra’s Composer in Residence - Solfa Carlile.

The orchestra gave its inaugural concert on Thursday 16th March 2006 at St Paul’s Church Knightsbridge. This event not only launched the orchestra, but was in aid of the London Irish Women’s Centre and was part of the Mayor of London’s official St Patrick’s Day Festival 2006.

Since the orchestra's foundation, we have established a strong presence in new music - thus far, we have given World Premieres of works by Solfa Carlile and Jonathan Lee, with upcoming works including those by Graeme Stewart. In addition, British Premieres of works by Sean O Riada, John Kinsella and C.V. Stanford.
